Angeles City mayor welcomes rugby football club

ANGELES CITY -- Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan formally welcomed the Pot Bellied Pigs football club to Angeles City for the 13th Fat Boy Rugby tournament on Saturday, July 30.

“On behalf of the local government of Angeles City and its citizens, I wish to welcome the Pot Bellied Pigs, its organizer sand all of its staff to the 13th Fat Boy Rugby Tournament! As always, I am thankful for once again holding your event here in Pampanga,” Pamintuan said.

Pamintuan lauded the organizers of the tournament for consistently hosting the event for more than a decade now.

“Allow me to be a little sentimental and share a piece of history from Angeles to you. In 1992, after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo, Angeles, alongside other neighboring towns and cities, were ravaged and destroyed from the combination of black ash, lahars, and the inclement weather conditions that made bad things only worse. During the aftermath, we never thought we'd rise as a city again. Industries fell, business was down and people were left with only hope to cling on,” the mayor shared.

“However, that single spark of hope led to the establishment of several projects, including the now annual ‘Tigtigan Terakan keng Dalan’ (merrymaking and dancing in the streets), which has been dubbed as the biggest street party of the Philippines. We conceptualized this event back then to revive the downtrodden spirits of the Angeleños, and today, it now symbolizes our resiliency as Angeleños and resiliency as Filipinos,” Pamintuan further added.

Pamintuan said that there is a rich parallelism with the “Tigtigan” with the annual Fat Boy 10's rugby tournament.

“I see a rich parallelism with our Tigtigan with your annual Fat Boy 10's rugby tournament. Through strong partnerships, your organization was able to consistently hold this Tourney-for-a-cause, and I couldn't laud and praise you enough for being firm in your goal to help local communities each and every year. As always, thank you very much to the Pot Bellied Pigs RFC. Here's to many more years in the pitch!” Pamintuan concluded. (PR)
