AN ALLEGED member of the New People's Army (NPA) was killed in a firefight with government troops in Sal-lapadan town in Abra on Sunday, February 11.
First Lieutenant Catherine Hapin, public information officer of the 7th Infantry Division, said the encounter ensued while members of the 24th Infantry Battalion led by 1st Lieutenant Ricardo Francisco Jr. were patrolling Barangay Ud-udiao around 7:30 a.m. following reports that NPA members were extorting from the villagers.
"They were suddenly fired upon by 10 fully armed CNTs (CPP-NPA terrorists)," she said.
Hapin said the firefight lasted about 28 minutes. The troops recovered three M16 rifles, one carbine, one Icom radio and the body of the slain rebel from the scene.
No civilian or soldier was hurt.
Major General Felimon Santos Jr., commander of the 7th Infantry Division, said the command is resolved to clear the province of Abra of terrorists and that they will not stop until all the CNTs are gone or have surrendered. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo/SunStar Philippines)
