Duterte defends rape remark

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Monday clarified that he was not making a joke when he mentioned the rape in a speech delivered last week, saying that he is actually threatening those who will be charged of rape.

“When I mentioned the rape, I was not joking. Who said I was joking about rape? I was not joking. Listen to the original speech. I was mentioning to the group that day what happened in Bulacan – that even the one-year-old child was slain and raped,” the President said.

“So I said, ‘You know, even if you rape a one-year-old or a Miss Universe, just the same, you will lose your balls and I will kill you.' What’s wrong [with that]?” he added.

Duterte’s statement came after drawing flak when he told his audience in Davao City that he would “congratulate” those who would rape the contestants of Miss Universe beauty pageant.

Speaking before the delegates of 11th Ambassador’s Tour Philippine Reception, he said: “What I don’t like are kids being raped. You can mess with, maybe Miss Universe. Maybe, I will even congratulate you for having the balls to rape somebody when you know that you are going to die.”

Earlier in the day, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said the Chief Executive simply made the statement “sarcastically.” (SunStar Philippines)
