DIRECTOR Erik Matti came to Liza Soberano's defense after critics questioned why the young actress was chosen to play the iconic role of "Darna."
Since Star Cinema announced that Soberano is indeed the new Darna, the actress received nods from celebrities who portrayed the comic character.
Many netizens also backed Soberano for the role. But several others were a bit disappointed when the young Kapamilya star was recently asked to do Darna's battle cry on "ASAP," with some noticing her American twang.
Matti, who will helm the much-anticipated big screen project, said Soberano is just warming up to the character.
He believes the 19-year-old will nail the project.
"May kasama pa namang hiya yun kasi hindi pa niya inaangkin talaga. But I've seen her movements and she's young. Alam mo naman ang mga bata ngayon, pursigido. She's going to nail it."
Matti added that Soberano is the best person to play the iconic Filipina super heroine character.
"She's a good pick because ang features niya talaga, she could be really sweet, she could be innocent, but at the same time she could be fiery, brave and pwede siyang mag represent ng Filipina."
The director also disclosed that they are meticulously researching what's the best costume for Soberano.
He received several drafts from the fans on social media and promised that they will keep everything in mind.
"I've been tagged on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with so many designs of new Darna. A lot of them look awesome and maganda yung idea behind it. We'd probably work on maybe 15 types of costume for Darna and of course we are trying to come up now with a design that is really fitting of Liza."
Asked what to expect from Soberano's costume? Matti said it will still reflect the essentials in Darna's costume but they will modernize it.
"Andoon yung mga iconic references but we are trying to bring Darna to a contemporary setting. We want Darna to be progressive. Gusto din namin na functional yung costume," he ended.
"Darna" is slated for a 2018 release. (SunStar Philippines)
