KALIBO, Aklan -- The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry(PCCI)-Aklan has opposed the planned operation of Small Town Lottery (STL) here.
Jose Mari Aldecoa, a PCCI-Aklan board member, expressed the group's opposition during the hearing of the Provincial Board for the operation of STL in the province Tuesday afternoon. Aside from PCCI-Aklan, the Kalibo Diocese has also manifested its strong opposition to the numbers game.
Aldecoa, also a former PCCI-Aklan president, noted that even House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is also opposing the operation of STL in the countryside.
"The STL, unlike other forms of gambling, is peculiarly pervasive, intrusive and ineffective because bettors are approached by agents in their homes, places of work and even inside school campuses where security controls are weak, therefore greatly enhancing its capacity to starve the local economy of its lifeblood and its currency in circulation," Aldecoa said.
The PCCI-Aklan also called on different organizations to also express their strong opposition to the proposed STL operation.
The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office said that at least three companies are interested to invest in STL operation in the province. (PNA)
