THE Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) Blue Knights survived past DMMA College of Southern Philippines (DCSP), 70-64, to pace bracket A of the ongoing 80th Araw ng Dabaw Sports Festival Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament at the Almendras gym, Davao City Recreation Center Saturday.
Blue Knights Mahonley Tarranza drilled in 17 points as Erick Patrick Dulay and James Doblado canned 13 and 12 points, respectively, to keep an unbeaten 2-0 win-loss record.
The Mariners leaned on the services of RB Damaolao who canned 27 points.
Teammate Kenneth Aguanta added 11 points for DCSP who slumped to 0-2 card.
AdDU head coach Cholo Elegino, in an interview with SunStar Davao, said he reminded his players to be patient in both offense and defense and focus on their strategy.
“Na di-disappoint kasi sila sa zone defense ng DCSP, kaya nagiging aggressive sila and they can’t take open shots,” Elegino said.
He added that they still need to intensify their training as they aim for the title.
“We haven’t won a title yet this year and it’s a long way to go. A difficult road since every team is capable of beating everyone. But we will still do our best to be the number one and everything is a matter of adjustments,” Elegino said, adding that Isaias Gravador-coached Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) and Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) are among the stiffest contenders in their bracket.
Meanwhile, the Holy Cross College of Sasa defeated the Philippine Women's College (PWC), 86-84, in the event sponsored by the Sports Development Division-City Mayors Office and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. (ABM)
