Mendoza: Be kind, always kind

FR PHILIP HENG, S.J. is a Jesuit priest from Singapore. Even when I was there in Singapore in 2001 when I took up Diploma in Applied Linguistics, I already subscribed to receive daily gospel published by Fr. Heng and sent through my email until today.

In one of the readings just recently, he cited a verse in the Bible that is suited to relationships in the workplace. In the Gospel, Jesus taught His Disciples to preserve the unity of their communities. The Bible also said that they are to be founded and centered on God's Compassionate Love that every person is to be respected, and all sinners are to be treated with patience and genuine love. The Gospel concluded in urging the believers to pray for such wisdom in their communities.

Why is unity a potent force to preserve in an organization? No amount of efforts to effectively do one’s job can replace a culture of oneness in purpose and action in sustaining one’s program or project. A program or project cannot succeed if not supported by majority of stakeholders. In the same manner that support cannot just be asked if the one wanting it is not showing his worth to be given such.

It is a symbiotic process. Just like if one wants to be respected, he must first show respect to whatever is the status in life of the person he is dealing with. The more one goes higher in stature or rank, the more that he needs to make his feet to always be rooted in the ground. We are now in a world where servant leadership is one of the best things that happened to our leaders and their constituents. Let not our success be the end of our connection with this world.

There is a saying, “Treat the people well in your way up because they are the same people who will stick to you on your way down.” This simply means, we need to connect to the present world. We have to accept that life must go on.

You may not all be participants in all endeavor’s done inside the classroom and within the school premises but it did not take your right and obligation to give our one hundred percent support to all that will make the lives of our schoolchildren better.
