Romeo Sumbi Jr. had a monstrous game to lead Bantayan to a one-sided 83-58 win over Sta. Fe in the opener of the Governor’s Cup 2018 Basketball Tournament last night in the Cebu Coliseum.
Sumbi Jr. put on a dominant performance with 33 points and hit four three-pointers.
Bantayan had a shaky start after having trouble handling the ball and turning it over on multiple occasions to a smaller Sta. Fe team.
Bantayan finally found its groove near the end of the second quarter after ending the period with nine unanswered points—including two three-pointers by Sumbi Jr.--for a 36-21 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Bantayan led by 18 points, 47-29, after a 10-1 run sparked by Sumbi Jr. and Renz Ortiz. Sta. Fe, however, answered with a 12-2 rally and trimmed it to six points, 47-41.
Entering the fourth with a 12-point lead, Bantayan’s lead ballooned to 23 points, the biggest in the game, with a 14-4 run to start the final frame.
Sumbi Jr. had his best quarter in the fourth, scoring 16 points from his nifty layups and his three-point shot.
Ortiz was the only other Bantayan player that scored in double figures with 14 points.
Villabrille led Sta. Fe with 25 points, while Raul Asingua Jr. added 15 markers.
Bantayan and Sta. Fe is in North Division Bracket 2 along with Daanbantayan, Medellin, Madridejos and San Remegio. EKA
