Differently-abled wins in Dragon Boat Fiesta 2018

THE Philippine Accessible Disability Services (Pads) Adaptive Dragon Boat Racing Team defeated able bodied opponents as they won the Masters Mixed Small Boat 500-meter race of the Cebu Dragon Boat Fiesta 2018 at the Naga City Boardwalk Saturday, April 14.

The team that is captained by amputee Arnold Balais proved abler than three teams who had complete functions.

"I am very happy that we have won in our first race in the Masters category, the 40-up division. Moreso, we won over able bodied opponents. It's a double victory for us," Balais said.

Pads finished the race in three minutes and 20.24 seconds, which was 36th of a second faster than the second placer Team Triton of Manila and 1.40 second better than the third placer - Team Baybreeze Sports Unlimited of Tacloban City.

The fourth placer was the Chinese squad Team Nanjing, who finished the race in 3:30.84.

Meanwhile, the Dragon Warriors of the Philippine Army proved too much over the rest of the field as they won the Women's Small Boat 500-m race by a mile.

The Lady Armies crossed the finished line in three minutes and 33.9 seconds, followed the Dumaguete Yellow Fins who were clocked at 3:40.6, the Dauis Wild Dragons of Bohol (3:43) and Team Triton of Manila (3:47)

The PNP Maritime Team crossed the finish line uncontested in 3:06.48 but capsized 10-meters from the end line as they swam their way to the loading docks to claimed the Elite Mixed Category Small Boat title.
