NIR’s dissolution a boost to Region 7’s bid in Palaro

AFTER falling to ninth place in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa, Region 7 gets a welcome reinforcement as six divisions revert to the team following the dissolution of Negros Island Region (NIR).

This after President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Executive Order (EO) No. 38 last Aug. 7, revoking EO No. 138 by former president Benigno Aquino III, the order that created the NIR last 2015.

Region 7 gets back Negros Oriental, Dumaguete City, Bayawan City, Guihulngan City, Tanjay and Bais to return to a 19-division Central Visayas.

The Provinces of Negros Occidental, meanwhile, will be back to Western Visayas.

The coaches of Region 7 and the Department of Education (DepEd)-Central Visayas share the same opinion on the return of these divisions to Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa).

Dr. Luz Jandayan, DepEd-Central Visayas’ chief of Education Support Service Division (SSD), said that the athletes from the provinces of Negros Oriental will greatly help Region 7, which suffered its worst finish in Palarong Pambansa, falling to ninth place last summer in Antique. NIR finished fourth.

“Negros Oriental’s forte is in the individual events. Their return is advantageous to us,” said Jandayan.

Table tennis coach and UC sports coordinator Jessica Honoridez said these divisions formidable athletes who can produce medals.

“They have specialization in the various fields. They’re strong in archery and swimming and contending players in table tennis,” said Honoridez.

“I think with the return of these regions we will rise on the ranking. We can select the best athletes from 19 divisions again,” she added.

For track and field coach Arvin Loberanis, the recent news can boost Region 7’s bid for Palarong Pambansa.

“They have good sports development in swimming and archery. In athletics, we can count on them in long distance, throwing and sprint events,” he said.

Jandayan said that in September they will have a meeting with representatives from all the 19 divisions as they prepare for the Cviraa meet and Palarong Pambansa next year. (RSC)
