Macarine ready to make record

OPEN-WATER swimmer Ingemar Macarine will suit up for his toughest swim as he attempts to become the first Filipino to conquer the waters of the English Channel at 9:30 a.m. today.

Macarine will swim non-stop from United Kingdom to France, covering a total of 33 kilometers.

“The English Channel is considered as the ‘Mount Everest’ for open water swimmers. No Filipino has ever crossed the English Channel yet,” said Macarine.

Macarine has done more than 30 swims in the country since 2014 for his advocacy for cleaner seas and beaches.

“This swim in the English Channel is dedicated to all Filipinos and to promote cleaner seas and tourism in the Philippines. We are hoping and praying for good weather and a successful crossing,” he said.

Macarine said that based on his boat pilot Eric Hartley of Pathfinder Charter, England will have a good weather during his attempt.

Last year, Macarine was in England and ready to conquer the English Channel, but his swim was canceled due to bad weather.

“I have prepared for two years for this swim. Hypothermia would be my number one challenge as I am used to the tropical waters of the Philippines,” he said. (RSC)
