SACRED Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles point guard Travis Mantua has found himself a home in the college ranks following his outstanding performance in the recently concluded SM-NBTC League National High School Championships at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City last week.
Mantua, the court general of the Magis Eagles’ first runner-up finish at the annual high school basketball tournament, accepted the offer to play for the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers.
“Coach Boy (Sablan) was very interested in him (Mantua). He like the maturity of Mantua’s game, in fact he was there to watch that semifinal and championship games of SHS-AdC. He was impressed that he right away asked Travis to be a part of UST’s Team 1. Not the team B. Meaning he will be lined-up for the UAAP next season,” Eden Huang told SunStar Cebu.
Huang, the father of UST swingman Zachary, who is also an alumna of the Magis Eagles, was largely responsible for the meeting between Travis, his father Gerry and coach Sablan.
“Right now, UST is one point guard short and according to coach Boy, Travis can be the No.2 in the rotation. He will be lined-up for the FilOil tournament in April. He will be taking a promotion exam to make him eligible for college. And I think he can pass the test easily,” Huang said.
Mantua, was supposed to be Grade 12 in the coming school year but since he is no longer eligible to play because of the age limit, his father accepted the offer that would make him play directly in the college level.
“Naa man sad offer from other schools, but we are more comfortable with UST with a big help from sir Eden Huang. And I want what’s best for Travis future. We feel UST is the right home for him kay magamit dayon siya,” the older Mantua said .
The Mantuas went to consult close friends, family and the coaching staff of SHS-AdC Magis Eagles, especially coach Rommel Rasmo.
