'Drug pusher' linked to Quiamco nabbed in Barili

A SUSPECTED drug pusher who has links to a slain "narco-cop" was caught in a raid around 8 a.m. Friday, September 1, in Sitio Kamagayan, Barangay Minolos, Barili, Cebu.

Superintendent Joie Yape Jr., the Provincial Intelligence Branch (PIB) chief, identified the suspect as Gerardo Caballes Basera, 40.

Yape said Basera's cousin Junibert Caballes Zaldo escaped, after he noticed the operatives.

He said Basera and Zaldo are underlings of Police Officer 3 Ryan Martus Quiamco, who was named by President Rodrigo Duterte as a big-time drug personality. Quiamco and his wife Rizalyn were killed in a shootout with the police in Talisay City, Cebu last August 15.

Zaldo and Basera had been included in the high value target list of Cebu Provincial Police Office.

The raid was authorized by two search warrants issued by Danao City Regional Trial Court Branch 25 Judge Jerry Dicdican.

More than P200,000 worth of illegal drugs were recovered from the suspects' respective houses.

The operatives of PIB, Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit, Provincial Public Safety Company, Provincial Special Weapons and Tactics, Regional Maritime Unit and Barili Police Station first raided Zaldo's residence, but he was able to elude arrest after noticing them from afar.

A .22 air rifle, a pack of methamphetamine hydrochloride or "shabu" worth P59,000, cash amounting to P12,000 and drug paraphernalia were recovered in his house.

Basera was caught in his house, yielding an M1 garand, a US .30 carbine with magazine, .9mm black widow revolver loaded with five bullet, 15 grams of shabu worth P177,000, digital weighing scale and drug paraphernalia.

Suspects will face charges for illegal possession of firearms and violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. (KAL)
