XUHS 1995 cagers lifted jersey No. 17 after bagging their third title in the 8th XUHS-ABA St. Ignatius de Loyola Cup best-of-three final on Sunday at the XU gym here.
The 95ers dethroned defending champion Alumni 1994 via a sweeping 2-0 finish capped by a convincing 69-57 win in Game 2.
They dedicated the victory to the owner of the jersey, the late shooting guard Alvin Llavore who joined his Creator last year.
Paul “Shantao” Moreno and Jan-Jan Geroy led the 95ers with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
Geroy himself took out Llavore’s jersey and waved it at the sound of the final buzzer, then altogether offered a prayer for him and the team’s victory.
Both teams went toe-to-toe in the first three quarters, but the 95ers got the better midway of the fourth and final quarter, posting a 15-point lead that set the tone for a trouble-free endgame finish.
“Alvin Llavore was with us. He was there around us cheering and I believed he was smiling now,” said assistant coach Fred “Boboy” Dael. Paul Valencia delivered 19 points for the 94ers’ losing cause.
