SOME 30 houses and business establishments were razed when a fire hit the slum areas in Barangays 26 and 22, Cagayan de Oro on Thursday afternoon, October 12.

Senior Fire Officer 4 Arnulfo Nabua placed the damage at P1.6 million.

The fire started around 3:31 p.m. and was declared under control at 4:36 p.m.

It is still unclear what caused the fire, but Nabua said it started in the house occupied by a certain Semi Cairel.

Nabua said they had a hard time getting to the area because of the narrow roads of the said barangays.

Nabua said the blaze quickly spread since the houses mostly made up of light materials were close in proximity.

Barangay 26 village chief Alexander dela Cerna said the owner of the house where the fire allegedly started was not around.

"Dili pa nato masuta kung kinsa ang nabilin kay ang ingon sa silingan nila, wala gyuy tao sa ilang balay (We can’t tell who the owner of the house is since the neighbors said no one was around that time)," dela Cerna said.

Dela Cerna, meanwhile, made an appeal to the public to donate food and clothes to the victims who are now occupying the basketball court of said barangay.
