SOME 20 New People’s Army (NPA) rebels burned three dump trucks owned by the Del Monte Employees Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative (DEARBC) at Sitio 23, Pelaez village, Claveria, Misamis Oriental, around 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 19.
First Lieutenant Janelle Diaz, civil military operations officer of the 58th Infantry Battalion, confirmed that the heavily armed rebels responsible for the burning were believed to be members of NPA guerrilla front 4B.
Diaz said the vehicles loaded with pineapple crowns for planting were supposed to be delivered to the area when the communist guerrillas flagged down and burned the trucks.
After the incident, the rebels withdrew from the area, passing through Sitio Dugo-Dugo of the same village.
The operations officer from the Army's 4th Infantry Division said the incident was again a result of non-payment of the revolutionary tax.
"Hindi talaga nagbibigay sa kabila ang company kaya nila ginagawa ang pagsunog ng mga trucks (The firm does not pay revolutionary tax that is why they were targeted),"Diaz said.
Diaz said soldiers are currently pursuing the NPA rebels responsible for the burning. (Alwen Saliring)
