Baguio sees tough contest in Korean Festa qualifying

ARCHERS from the Summer Capital test their mettle for the Korean Festa qualifying tournament slated next month in San Fernando City, La Union.

Baguio Archery Club coach John Hongitan said at least 15 archers from the city will compete in the two day tournament expected to see participants coming from Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley and Cordillera.

“We were hoping na sana dito sa Baguio gaganapin yung qualifier (that the qualifier will be held here in Baguio) but right now hindi pa tapos yung ating archery range kaya we decided na sa La Union muna gaganapin (our archery range is not done so we decided to hold it in La Union),” said Hongitan.

The tournament comes more than a week after the staging of the Palarong Pambansa were the country’s best elementary and high school students will slug it out in a weeklong competition to be held in Antique.

“Yung mga galing ng Palaro siguradong shoo-in na sila sa (Athletes from Palarong Pambanso will shoo-in) qualifying tournament but we wanted to have more participants from Baguio para mas malaki ang chance na makapasok sa (so more chances of qualifying to) Korean Festa,” added Hongitan.

While the World Archery Philippines (WAP) has already formed a national contingent, Hongitan said the Summer Capital is also hoping to complete its own line-up for the weeklong competition.

Expected to see action in the qualifying tournament are Korean Festa alumni Charmaine Angela Villamor, brothers Robert and Angelo Calalo, Caelan Nicholas Saval, Kate Louise Balageo and Brette Leean Hongitan.

“Magandang exposure eto sa mga bata kasi mas lalo nilang nadedevelop yung kanilang skills and at the same time they get to learn new things and make new friends,” added Hongitan.

Now on its 5th year, the Seoul International Youth Archery Festa 2017 is organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Seoul Sports Council in cooperation with the Seoul Archery Association and slated July 6 to 12.

The international sports tournament will be offering free board and lodging, and registration fees for one of the officially listed and qualified rosters in each of the invited countries. (Roderick Osis)
