WITH DE LA Salle University confirming its participation, the third edition of the Pedro R. Mendoza Memorial Cup hits the net on May 14 to 20 in multiple venues in the Summer Capital.
Backed by the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF), the week-long tournament hosted by the Cordillera Volleyball Federation (CVF) will see top rated men and women’s teams coming from the National Capital Region and other adjacent provinces in Luzon.
The annual volleyball championship of the PVF, which is part of their grassroots development program, aims to create opportunities for students to showcase and enhance their volleyball skills and abilities.
CVF secretary general Danny Cong-o said they are expecting more than a dozen schools to take part in the invitational tournament.
“We are still awaiting confirmation from other schools in Manila but we are happy that La Salle, this early, have confirmed their participation,” Cong-o said.
Baguio–Benguet Educational Athletic League men’s and women’s volleyball champions University of the Cordilleras and the University of Baguio is also expected to see action in the weeklong tournament.
“We are still awaiting a word from Saint Louis University for their confirmation if they will be joining the competition,” added Cong-o.
Reigning 2016 intercol champions University of the Philippines is expected to return and defend its men’s crown while Arellano U, which won the distaff side is seen to return in the tournament which serve as a tribute to the development of volleyball and sports assistances of the PVF’s late president.
Cong-o added they are expecting at least 14 squads coming from the National Capital Region including Baguio City and nearby Benguet for the annual tournament initiated by the late Mendoza before he passed on late in 2014. (Roderick Osis)
